Let's break down macronutrients. For athletes and building muscle, macronutrients is a very important part of the fitness puzzle. Of the three macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fats) Protein is the only one which contains nitrogen. Nitrogen is necessary for building muscle.

Consuming sufficient protein can help keep you in a "positive nitrogen balance" This means that your body is retaining more nitrogen than is excreting. Being in a positive nitrogen balance is indicative that you are in a anabolic (tissue building) state. That means you are in a position to build bigger muscle.

Now let's talk about fats you need to eat. Eating more fat can be a good thing. Getting enough of the good fats will help you lose fat, build muscle and recover faster from your workouts. Good fats have a myriad of health benefits, including being good for your heart. People always try to distinguish good fats from bad fats.

Good fats include: Polyunsaturated fats like omega-3s such as those from fish and nuts, also monounsaturated fats. Such as those from peanut butter, olive oil, egg yolks and fish oil. The bad fats are saturated fats and trans fats. You will find saturated fats in some protein meats in small amounts just try to limit the consumption of these types of fats.

Carbohydrates play a very important part in building muscle and losing fat. When you eat carbohydrates, they are digested in the stomach and small intestine to individual sugar molecules known as glucose or in layman's terms "blood sugar." Rising levels of blood glucose trigger an organ known as the pancreas to release insulin, which then signals muscle tissue to take in both glucose and amino acids. On top of this, insulin also signals the muscle to stop breaking down proteins! For this reason. Protein shake formulations would benefit from adding a small amount of carbohydrates to their mixture in order to not only stimulate protein synthesis, but also stop the breakdown of muscle tissue. That is why when taking or eating protein always include carbohydrates and fats for best results. When we build new muscle we burn more calories through out the day.
